The Ultimate Question
When I was in college, I had a roommate named Ellen. For almost two years Ellen dated Steve, and as graduation approached, so did the big question. Would they marry? Was Steve "the one?"
Ellen wrestled with the question. She talked to friends. To family. Then finally she decided to see a counselor.
This wise counselor told Ellen to ask herself one simple question: "Are you a better person because you know Steve?"
She didn't need to ponder. The answer to this one single question was clear. Steve was a wonderful person, a smart person, but no, she wasn't a better person because she knew him.
Despite her answer, Ellen married Steve, and several years later, they divorced. To this day, I've never forgotten that question.
Next time you find yourself struggling with a friendship that feels draining or a love relationship that's confusing, ask yourself: "Are you a better person because you know ___?" Your answer could make all the difference.
