Dear Darlene,
My daughter Sophia recently had an open house at her elementary school. Here she is displaying her amazing 5th grade project, and I'm the happy parent by her side (My husband is behind the camera). There's little risk that time spent together is time well spent. But not everything in life is risk-free. How do you know when to take a chance, and when to step back? That's the topic for this month's article, "How To Take A Risk." Warmly,
Dr. Darlene Mininni

How To Take A Risk
Are you the kind of person that enjoys taking a risk or does it frighten you? The word risk can conjure up images of danger and peril or opportunity and adventure.
When you take a risk, it's good to aim for the "risk sweet spot" -- the place where you minimize the "peril" part and you maximize the "opportunity" part. Read on if you're wondering whether you should take a risk:
3 QUESTIONS TO LAND IN THE RISK SWEET SPOT!
1. What's The Worst That Can Happen? Imagine the worst-case scenario. Now ask yourself, "Could I handle that if it happened?" If the answer is absolutely not, then maybe this isn't the risk for you. If the answer is yes, it might be worth taking the chance.
2. Is The Timing Right? When it comes to risk, sometimes timing is everything. Maybe you're up for the risk, but you need a few more skills under your belt or you need to get more support from others. Or maybe you're raising young children, and a big leap would be more realistic a few years down the road.
3. What Does It Cost Me Not To Risk? We don't usually consider what we lose by not taking a risk, but that can happen. One man was afraid to leave his high stress job and ended up with a heart attack. His fear of taking a risk cost him his health. When you're contemplating a change, think about what you might lose from not taking a chance, too.
