Dear Darlene,

Greetings and Happy May!

I spent this past weekend at the 2009 Donate Life Run/Walk and Family Festival. This wonderful annual event celebrates and raises awareness about organ and tissue donation. Dr. Darlene and Vanessa

Here's a photo of me with Vanessa Hong Van Nguyen, Asian Community Educator and Family Advocate for OneLegacy, a California organization dedicated to the life-saving benefits of organ and tissue donation.

The power of this event was sure to put anyone in a good mood. And if you're looking for more ways to feel good, check out this month's article, "3 Ways To Get Out Of A Bad Mood."

Warmly,

3 Ways To
Get Out Of A Bad Mood

Have you ever been in a bad mood? That's when you feel like you got up on the wrong side of the bed, or everyone seems to annoy you, or you just want to scream! Everyone has days like that.

So here are three ways you can get rid of that bad mood (sorry, chocolate isn't one of them!).

3 TIPS TO GET OUT OF A BAD MOOD

1. Watch A Funny Movie. Whether it's a giggle or a howl, laughter can boost your  mood. That's because when you laugh, you produce fewer stress hormones, and that leads to more happiness. And if you watch a funny flick with other people, you're 30 times more likely to laugh than when you're alone. So plan that movie night!

2. Get Sunny. Turns out sunshine is Mother Nature's natural mood booster. When you're exposed to natural light, you raise your body's natural feel-good chemical, serotonin, and that makes you feel good. So if you're looking for a lift, pull back the curtains, open the sunroof on your car or hang out in the sunshine for 15-30  minutes. Even with suncreen, you'll soak up the happiness benefits.

3. Listen To Music. Did you know that listening to your favorite tunes can calm your nervous system, and that can boost your mood? So what should you listen to? Whatever you'd like, but here's a general tip. Upbeat music will energize you if you're feeling down, and soothing music will calm you if you're feeling anxious. Next time you're in a funk, reach for your iPod, and you'll soon be singing a different tune.
