Are You In A Transition?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Have you ever seen Wile E. Coyote jump off a cliff? As he flies through the air, he nervously wonders, "Will I ever make it to the other side?" Then you know about transitions. It's that uneasy gap in time when you're no longer on the firm ground of certainty, but you haven't yet landed where you're going to be.
Our lives our filled with transitions: from a baby's first awkward attempts to shift from crawling to walking to a teenager's metamorphosis from kid-body to adult-body.
Once you've reached adulthood, the transitions keep coming. You're ready to leave your job, but haven't figured out what to do next. You've moved to a new town, but it doesn't feel like home. You've ended a relationship, and stumble back into single life.
Even wonderful transitions -- like marrying a soul mate -- can often create unexpected melancholy. That's because sometimes when you get something good, you lose something good, too. In marriage, you might give up some of your independence or your great apartment to gain love and stability with a life partner.
The point to remember is that as our lives change, our adjustments to those twists and turns can transform us in valuable ways. Not only do we learn what's really important to us, but we often realize we have more strength and resiliance than we ever dreamed possible.
Tip of the Month
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Here are 3 tips to help you master life's transitions:

  • Watch Your Words: When you're going through a life change, what do you say to yourself? Do you focus on what's been lost or what's been gained? Instead of saying, "It's depressing that my kids are off to college," try, "I'm lucky that I get to explore new possibilities." While it's healthy to grieve something that's lost, it's also helpful to search for what's good in change.

  • Old Stories: Recall times when you were successful with change. How did you handle your first break-up? Or your freshman year of college? Did you make it through a job layoff or firing? Focus on the strengths that helped you cope, and use them again.

  • Look for Role Models: Odds are if you're going through a transition, there's probably someone two steps ahead of you that's already gone through the same thing. Listen to their stories and victories. How did they manage the ambiguities of life's inevitable changes? What can you learn from them?
