Is There a Link Between Stress and Your Health?

After Christine had taken care of the kids, cleaned the house, and met a pressure-filled deadline at work, she rested. Well, not exactly rested. She landed in bed with the flu.

Is it possible that stress made her sick? Because stress can lower your immune system's fighting power, you may find yourself getting more colds or infections when you're emotionally overwhelmed. And that's usually the time you don't get the sleep and nutrition you need either.

You can't avoid stress; it's a part of everyone's life. And it does have its upside: motivating you to be your best. But too much of a good thing, can be too much. Here are a few strategies proven to help you cope a little better.


Tip of the Month

  • Soothe your tension: Physical movement is a great antidote to the tension of stress. When you're overwhelmed, take a brisk walk or enjoy a session of stretching or yoga. You need only ten minutes of movement to feel better.


  • Belly Breathing: Breathe in deeply to the count of three, and feel your belly rise. Hold that breath for 3 seconds. Then slowly breathe out to the count of six. That's 3-3-6. When your mind wanders to your worries, gently redirect it back to your breath. Do this five minutes a day and whenever you feel stressed.


  • Ask For Help: Superwoman is not a happy person! Learn to ask others for help when you need it. Delegate more activities to your colleagues, ask a friend for a hand or have the kids pitch in more at home.


  • Just Say No: There's never an end to the number of people who need your help or want your company, but it's not possible to do it all. Be selective. Whenever possible, say "no" to requests that will drain you physically or emotionally.
