Helping Kids with Their Feelings
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 When you send your
kids
back to school this year, they'll likely have sharpened
pencils and a new lunchbox. Why not give them an
emotional toolkit too?
Kids nowadays have lots of demands on them-the
pressure to acheive, fit in socially and just plain grow
up! What can today's parents do to help their children
thrive emotionally?
One way is to give them
the skills they need to manage their feelings. Few
schools have the time or finances to offer an
emotional education during the school day, but you
can.
Here's three simple strategies that can
help your kids cope a little better with life's ups and
downs.
Tip of the Month
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Teach Your Kids to Relax: Children have a
lot on their plate between school, homework and
social activities. All this busyness can lead to anxiety
and later on, adults who don't know how to unwind.
Teach your kids that it's okay to have unproductive
time during their day. Give them unstructured
downtime to use any way they want.
Feelings Are Okay: If you want your kids to
be comfortable with feelings as adults, help them to
recognize their emotions by putting labels on them. If
your child is worried, instead of saying, "It'll be fine," try
this: "I can see you're really worried."
Be A Good Role Model: This doesn't
mean you have to be perfect-in fact, just the
opposite. Show your children that it's okay to fail by
using yourself as a model. For example, if you're
taking your own bad mood out on your child, you might
say: "I'm snapping at you because I had a tough day,
and that's not fair. I'm sorry." It's not the mistakes
they'll remember; it's the way you fix them.
