What's Your Story?

Think about something you'd like to change in your life. Now say it out loud. Chances are you said something like, "I'd like to find a mate," or "I'd like a better job." But did you know that if you change just one word in that sentence, you're more likely to find a way to do it?

That word is "I". Scientists are learning that when you change your focus from "I" to "She," you're more likely to take action. By picturing yourself as an actress in a movie--where "she" deals with your dilemmas and challenges instead of you--there's a distance created that helps you work through your problems more easily.

Turns out being the Katherine Hepburn of your own life has its advantages.

  • Fantasy Life Required: Next time you have a problem, imagine yourself dealing with it on the big screen. Watch yourself. Then ask, "What can my character do to feel better?"

  • The Third Person: If you're upset about something, recall it in the third person such as, "She said this, then he did that." This can help you gain the perceptive you need to work it out.
