Lots of people use yoga as
a way to relax and unwind
from the craziness of their lives. One of my busy
workshop students describes yoga as a tonic for her
mind. But how can a few poses lead to such a
profound shift in your feelings?Now scientists from Boston University are offering answers. Their research shows that yoga can create changes in your brain similar to antidepressants. Practicing yoga may increase a mood-related brain chemical called GABA. The result? After a session of yoga, you feel calmer and happier-the perfect antidote for a hectic day. The next time you find stress leading you to the refrigerator, why not try heading to the yoga mat instead.
