Can Yoga Make You Happy?

Lots of people use yoga as a way to relax and unwind from the craziness of their lives. One of my busy workshop students describes yoga as a tonic for her mind. But how can a few poses lead to such a profound shift in your feelings?

Now scientists from Boston University are offering answers. Their research shows that yoga can create changes in your brain similar to antidepressants. Practicing yoga may increase a mood-related brain chemical called GABA. The result? After a session of yoga, you feel calmer and happier-the perfect antidote for a hectic day.

The next time you find stress leading you to the refrigerator, why not try heading to the yoga mat instead.

  • No pretzels required: You don't need to be super flexible to feel yoga's benefits. All poses can be adapted to meet any needs you may have, and you'll still get the same results.

  • Try a class or a DVD: If you're new to yoga, take a yoga class at your local community center or pick up an introductory yoga DVD such as Yoga for Dummies.
