Thank You “Appreciation can...change your life,” wrote former magazine editor Margaret Cousins. But how can you be appreciative when your life isn’t so great?

That’s when you need gratitude more than ever, researchers say. When people are consistently appreciative—regardless of their circumstances—they feel happier, healthier, and more energetic and optimistic than before. Gratitude is so powerful, in fact, it ranked as one of the top five keys to happiness in a survey given to people in forty countries.

Journalist Richard Handler—survivor of three brain surgeries—was skeptical when he began gratitude writing, but he said, “By...noon, I’d find myself stopping to check what had gone well already. And lots of little things had!” Handler says a small shift in his perspective changed his mood and the way he felt about his life.


Tip of the Month

How to boost your happiness using gratitude::

  • Create a Gratitude Journal: On a daily or weekly basis, write about those things for which you’re thankful, no matter how small. They could include a body that moves, sunlight through your kitchen window or a great lunch.


  • Mental Notes: As you go through your day, pay attention to the “good stuff.” Notice anything that goes right or makes you feel good.
