“Appreciation can...change your life,” wrote former
magazine editor Margaret Cousins. But how can you
be appreciative when your life isn’t so great?That’s when you need gratitude more than ever, researchers say. When people are consistently appreciative—regardless of their circumstances—they feel happier, healthier, and more energetic and optimistic than before. Gratitude is so powerful, in fact, it ranked as one of the top five keys to happiness in a survey given to people in forty countries. Journalist Richard Handler—survivor of three brain surgeries—was skeptical when he began gratitude writing, but he said, “By...noon, I’d find myself stopping to check what had gone well already. And lots of little things had!” Handler says a small shift in his perspective changed his mood and the way he felt about his life.
