Go Ahead, Laugh!

Did you know that a light-hearted giggle or chuckle can boost your health along with your spirits? Turns out your body enjoys a hearty laugh as much as you do.

When you laugh, great things happen in your body: you produce fewer stress hormones, your immune system strengthens, and your internal organs get a mini-workout. All of this contributes to a jump in your vitality and happiness.

When Norman Cousins, author of Anatomy of an Illness was first diagnosed with a painful spine condition, he found a steady diet of comedies—like Marx Brothers movies and Candid Camera— helped him sleep—pain-free—for two hours at a time. It seems the power of laughter is powerful, indeed.

How to put more laughter in your life:

  • Watch Funny Movies: Whether it’s a night at the movies or a rental at home, watching a great comedy is sure to lift your spirits. Need help finding a funny movie? Check this list compiled by the American Film Institute: http://www.afi.com/tvevents/100years/laughs.aspx.


  • Laugh With Your Pals: People laugh more when others are around than when they’re alone. So get the gang together to watch a funny movie, play games or have a party.


  • Change Your Mind: Sometimes changing your thoughts can make a stressful situation seem downright comical. When the sweet potato soup I was cooking blew up in my kitchen, I knew I had a grueling cleaning session ahead of me. But when I saw orange goo dripping from my ceiling, I had to admit—it was pretty funny.
