What can you do while you’re sitting, walking or even standing in an elevator that’s guaranteed to calm and relax you? I’m sure you guessed Ujjayi breathing, right?

This curious ancient Indian breathing technique can boost your mood by getting oxygen deep into your lungs. That extra oxygen jumpstarts the soothing quality of your nervous system so you feel calmer and more relaxed than before.

Ujjayi breathing is great to use when you’re nervous, overwhelmed or worried. To give it a try, follow the steps below.


Tip of the Month

Here’s how to do Ujjay breathing:

1. Whisper the sound haaa with your mouth open. It’s an airy sound similar to the one you make when you fog your glasses with your breath to clean them. Or, for you Star Wars fans, it’s the noise Darth Vader makes!
2. Make this sound as you exhale and inhale using long, slow, deep breaths.
3. Your belly should rise as you inhale and fall as you exhale.
4. Now close your mouth, and continue to make this same haaa sound.

In the beginning start with just a few Ujjay breaths so you don’t get dizzy. Remember to keep your mouth closed as you breathe. Work your way up to 5 or 6 complete breaths.
